As part of our deep commitment to the credit union tradition of ‘people helping people’, HUECU participates in a broad range of community activities and donates to several local, charitable programs. In celebration of International Charity Day, we reached out to a few amazing, local organizations making a different in our community, and asked them what they thought of our longstanding support of their work. Here’s what they said;

“We are so grateful for Harvard University Employee Credit Union's support of Food For Free's Party Under the Harvest Moon,” says Sasha Purpura, Executive Director of Food For Free. “Their sponsorship supports our Food Rescue program which brings two million pounds of food each year to more than a hundred local food programs and helps to feed more than 30,000 hungry people.” To get your tickets to Food For Free’s annual Party Under the Harvest Moon, visit FoodForFree.org.

“Cambridge Family and Children’s Service (CFCS) greatly appreciates the wonderful support that we have received over the years from Harvard University Employees Credit Union,” says Bob Gittens, Executive Director of CFCS. “Their financial and in-kind support helps us provide high quality services to the young people who are in our foster care and residential programs. We are especially grateful for the financial education training HUECU employees have delivered to the young people in one of our group homes, which gives them the skills necessary for success as independent adults. Our ability to serve children and families is greatly enhanced thanks to HUECU support.” To support the great work of CFCS, visit HelpFamilies.org.

“Harvard University Employees Credit Union’s sponsorship of A Bed for Every Child has made it possible for children growing up in poverty to have a bed of their own,” states Tina Giarla, Director of A Bed for Every Child program at the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless. “A good night’s sleep can help them at school,” she continues, “and we know that an education is the path way for a child to raise up and out of poverty as an adult.” This summer, HUECU’s residential lending team built a bed for a child in need. HUECU employee Daisy Familia reflected, “Building a bed for Lisa was an awesome teambuilding experience.  It put into perspective how fortunate I am to have a bed of my own.” Matt Wildman also agreed, “It is an incredible event to attend knowing that your efforts go to supporting a resting place for a child in need.” To attend or host a Build-a-Bed event of your own, visit BedForEveryChildMA.org.

For nearly 80 years, HUECU’s mission has been to help people at all stages of their financial lives. Today we continue our commitment to that tradition as we strive enhance our community economically, socially, and environmentally. That is why we’re not just a bank; we’re a benefit.

From all of us at HUECU, Happy International Charity Day!
