On January 22nd and 23rd, HUECU had the opportunity to work alongside Harvard College to host our 9th annual Wintersession “Financial Independence: Why It Matters”. We were excited to have students attend from all Harvard University, in addition to Harvard College students!

We were happy to welcome back Shahar Ziv, HUECU Board Member, as presenter for our investing session. He educated students on the power of how “being average” in their investing endeavors yields positive long term results. Dee Dee Chen, HUECU Board Member, used her Benefits expertise to help students navigate the waters on Employer Benefits as it fits into their overall compensation package. A student commented “Dee Dee made this complex issue so clear!”

We welcomed back Patrick Donnelly, Matt Iliteris, and Ian Cole from the Colony Group to help our students understand taxes and insurance more deeply. During the lively session, they answered questions about tax brackets, life insurance, and tax law changes. We were excited to have Jake Northrup, from Experience Your Wealth, as a first-time presenter. Jake helped the students think about their values in regards to retirement. Students envisioned what retirement would look like for them and learned tips on how to plan for their “Financial Freedom” (retirement) dream.

Migdalia Gomez, Community Engagement Manager at HUECU, closed each day with hands on sessions about budgeting and credit. Some students stayed after the session and immediately began working on their semester budgets.

We look forward to continuing to work with students throughout the spring semester! If you are interested in attending more sessions, take a look at our workshops page.
